FIre In My Bones

But if I say, “I will not mention the Living One or speak any more in the Sacred Name,” the Divine Word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.
~Jeremiah 20:9

Fire in my bones
Refusing to be silenced.
Fire in my heart
Refusing to be quenched.

They say I am not worthy –
“Be silent, sinner!”
I try to bank the coals
To subdue the fire
for the dark night of silence,
To leave only enough spark
to warm my own hearth.

But the Spirit still blows
A mighty wind,
A gentle breeze,
Stirring the sparks,
Igniting the flame
Till a bonfire rages
beyond my control.

How can one be silent
When the wind and flames
are roaring?
How can one quench an inferno,
When it races to consume?

Rather I am immolated
by the Spirit –
Tempered,
Sanctified,
Consecrated.

By the roaring of the Flame
Their voices are silenced.
